Artist Information
Artplace Gallery welcomes leather sculptor Dominique Hass. Currently residing in
Progresso Mexico, he creates exciting and unique shaped leather wall sculptures.
Made in the tradition of the ancient Romans, each piece is hand shaped, tooled,
and finished by the artist from a single piece of leather. Dominique has
dedicated nearly 20 years to the revival of a forgotten art. He departed his
home in Pompey, France to pursue a simpler, sunnier life in the Caribbean in the
mid 1980's. He began sculpting leather and selling his work in 1987 while living
in the Dominican Republic. Dominique Hass lived for a time in Haiti, Dominican
Republic, Jamaica, and Cuba before settling in Mexico. Haas mastered a
leatherworking technique used by the early Romans to create shields and armor.
True to tradition, Dominique specially prepares the hand-selected leather, then
shapes each mask from one seamless piece.
